Cultivating Inner Peace and Awareness

Meditation is a practice that involves moment to moment awareness of the present moment. I have been deeply influenced by teachings of Buddha and Ramana Maharshi, blending aspects of self enquiry, Vipassana and cultivating wisdom and compassion to help reach our Buddha potential. I often return to the teachings of the Four Immeasurables.

The Buddha taught the Four Immeasurables also known as the Four Divine Abodes or Brahmaviharas, are a set of four virtuous mental states in Buddhis - loving-kindness (metta/maitri), compassion (karuṇā), sympathetic joy (mudita), and equanimity (upekkha) – in order to remove ill will, cruelty, jealousy, clinging and aversion. These are cultivated through meditation and are intended to foster positive emotions and a balanced mindset.

  • Loving-kindness (metta/maitri):
This is the wish for all beings to be happy and well, a feeling of warmth, goodwill, and affection.

  • Compassion (karuṇā):
This is the desire to alleviate suffering in all beings, a feeling of empathy and a wish to reduce pain and hardship.

  • Sympathetic joy (mudita):
This is the joy felt when others are happy and successful, a feeling of sharing in their joy and a wish for their well-being to continue.

  • Equanimity (upekkha):
This is a balanced and impartial state of mind, neither attached nor averse to any experience, a state of calm acceptance and non-judgment.
Whatever arises within the space becomes our object of meditation and we see the reality as it is, not how we want it to be.
Starting with a motivation to meditate, we divide the meditation into two parts:
Stabilising – cultivating a calm, clear and focused mind and
Analytical – developing our insight and positive qualities

which is followed by a dedication to the teachers, the practice and the wish for all sentient beings to be happy and free from suffering.

Vipassana Meditation is an ancient mindfulness practice that cultivates deep self-awareness and inner peace. Rooted in Buddhist tradition, it involves observing thoughts, sensations, and emotions without attachment or judgment.
